A Photographic Journey through Present-Day Vietnam
A Profile of Southeast Asian Photographer Mickey Choothesa
Originally of Thai descent, Mickey Choothesa became inspired by Vietnam and other parts of Asia when he added travel photography to his repertoire of photojournalism, corporate events, and medical and commercial photography. His professional photography career has spanned from exhibitions in Connecticut and Atlanta , where he currently resides, and in other southeastern cities, to various local, national and international publications. Since 1999 however, Mickey has been nurturing a keen interest in capturing the local cultures, architecture and people of Thailand , Cambodia , Myanmar and Vietnam .
In all your travels throughout SE Asia , what inspires you the most about Vietnam ?
“What strikes me about Vietnam is that the people are genuine, show pride in their work, and pride in their country. They acknowledge the past but only want to look towards the future. Hence, you experience the furious pace of life in the streets, the race to master the English language, the incredible energy emerging from the people, and the surprising diversity not only in the accent and language of the people from the north to the south, but also the diversity in the cuisine and local customs.
Vietnam as a country has adapted incredibly to the geographical and historical forces which has affected its borders and culture in the various regions. French, Chinese and other influences can still be seen in the culture and cuisine today. Modern Vietnamese life reflects this fusion to make up what is truly Vietnamese in identity.”
Sushi Saigon thanks Mickey for his photographic work!
